CARRIERE, Miss. -- The Pearl River County school system is hoping to save money on its energy costs.
The Picayune Item reports (http://bit.ly/ABTHNJ) that the school board has decided to advertise for bids for an energy savings project that it hopes could save about $750,000 over 15 years.
An energy audit by Schneider Electric of Flowood found the system was spending about $400,000 a year. The company said the school system could save about $42,000 if it made some changes.
The school system has already implemented an energy savings competition among district schools.
Schools Superintendent Alan Lumpkin said that Lower Elementary was the energy savings winner for the month, with a 37 percent savings on its energy bill, saving the district $2,573.
He said that the district had an overall 26 percent savings on its energy bill because of the contest. He said the district saved $9,043 on its electricity bill overall.
Schneider officials said a main area of savings would be implementing an energy management system that would automatically turn on and off the cooling and heating systems.
Another proposal would be to place the system's 1,800 computers in "hibernation mode" when not in use.
The school board decided that although Schneider conducted the audit, other energy management companies would be allowed to bid on the project, as well as Schneider.
Lumpkin said the board is not obligated to implement the program and a decision would be made after the board sees the bids.
