Secret Service detail leaves gun unattended on Romney's flight

TAMPA - A member of Mitt Romney's Secret Service detail was removed today from a campaign trip after she accidentally left her firearm unattended in the candidate's charter plane bathroom.

The agent in question left a gun unattended in the bathroom of the plane during a flight between Tampa and Indiana. The gun was found by a reporter on board who immediately informed the agent, who then went back into the bathroom and retrieved the weapon.

Ed Donovan, a spokesman for the United States Secret Service, told ABC News that officials are "aware of the incident."

"We take the care and custody of our equipment - especially firearms - very seriously," he said. "We will deal with this matter internally and in an appropriate manner."

The Romney campaign referred all questions regarding the incident to the Secret Service.

The gun was left in the bathroom primarily used by media in the back of the plane. Romney and his staff sit in the front several rows of the plane and the candidate uses the forward bathroom.

It was not immediately clear if the gun was loaded or on a safety lock, but the agent was on active duty at the time of the incident.

Following a campaign event in Indiana, the agent in question never re-boarded the flight back to Tampa.

The Online Networks of Next Gen Consoles ? MultiPlatform

As interest in next generation consoles increases, I?ve seen a lot of talk about what theoretical PS4, ?Xbox 720?, and Wii U games will look like, but I?m honestly just as interested in what their operating systems will be like. One major aspect of that is the social interaction.

Graphics are usually the biggest indicator of generational leaps in video games, but in my opinion the defining thing about the current consoles was how users operated the consoles. This was the first time game consoles had complex operating systems. We went from just putting the game in the machine and turning it on to browsing digital libraries, installing updates, and maintaining friends lists. I think the next gen consoles could present the most major shift in that functionality: a ?super? generation of these operating systems if you will. Just think about it: What do you think Xbox Live will look like on the next Xbox?

The first hint of this will probably come in the form of Nintendo?s touted MiiVerse service for the Wii U and eventually 3DS. They?ve confirmed that the Wii U will finally introduce traditional accounts for Nintendo users, but the company just had to put their own spin on things. From their initial presentation during E3 it sounds like each individual piece of software will have its own sort of message board where users can converse about that one game. Kotaku has already tried to compare it to facebook, but trying to look at it from the perspective of a Japanese company, I think it?ll probably resemble 2chan (Futaba channel) or 2channel or something like that.

For those that don?t know, 2channel is a Japanese textboard mostly consisting of brief, quick messages as opposed to Facebook or most message boards, and is actually one of the most populous internet communities in the world. Its offshoot, 2chan, was the predecessor to 4chan. If you?d like, twitter is probably the closest thing to a tamer English equivalent. Twitter itself, which I understand is quite popular in Japan, is also probably a good analog to what Nintendo is going for with MiiVerse.

It seems Nintendo wants to increase the amount of discussion and social interaction going on in-game, even with singleplayer games. Leaving messages for friends in-game sounds sort of like Demon?s Souls. Being able to access a message board while playing sounds a bit like how Shigeru Miyamoto designed the original Zelda so that people would beat it by discussing it with friends by the water cooler. In my opinion it?s a great example of building a whole social system around honest game design.

Hopefully with the Wii U?s year head start, whatever it brings to the table could have some influence on console gaming in general going forward.

Potentially even more interesting are where Microsoft and Sony plan to take XBL and PSN respectively. I think both of them are more likely to try to create full-blown social networks within their platforms.

No one has really made a video game specific ?Facebook? yet, at least not one ubiquitous within gaming, the closest thing in my experience possibly being 1up.com. I think it could potentially make a console extremely engaging if they made social interaction a bigger part of it.

Imagine if you will, booting up your Xbox 720 or PS4, and being greeted with a news feed of what games your friends have been playing, what achievements they got, high scores they beat, game reviews they wrote, or screenshots they posted. If they could get people to interact with that OS as much as they do with Facebook it could be something pretty major.

I think Microsoft has the bigger chance of going all the way with this, especially with the likely cross-compatibility between Windows 8 and the next Xbox. I imagine it?ll be some massive MSN and Live-based social network stretching across the platforms ? a new version of Facebook at the OS-level if you will. Sony might try to follow suit but I don?t think they?ll have the initiative.

We?re already seeing the beginnings of this kind of system with Steam?s upcoming community updates though. Steam is what I wish all the console manufacturers would copy for next gen.

Steam as-is already gives you a news feed of what games and achievements your friends got, and gives you vital information like how many hours each of your friends has played a game as well as any recommendations they?ve written. Later this fall Steam will supposedly give players their own hub pages Facebook-style with updates, screenshots, and the like. Each game will have a hub page with popular screenshots, mods, and forums.

In my opinion this console generation has been more about services than hardware. The main reason most people buy games for the Xbox 360 over the PS3 is because they want to stay plugged into Xbox Live. Hopefully all three console manufacturers will take this to heart next gen.

Authorities remove 3 million bees from NYC home

Authorities in New York City have raided a Queens home where a man was keeping about 3 million bees.

The bees,? in 45 hives in a driveway, were carefully removed from the 111th Street house by beekeepers and police, the New York Post reports.

"There were more bees in this driveway than there are people in Queens," Andrew Cote of the New York City Beekeeper's Association, who helped remove the bees, told the Post.

Cote told Yahoo News he did not know the fate of the bees, he just assisted in their removal.

CBS Local New York reports the bees' owner was a beekeeper in China before becoming a restaurant owner in New York City. The bees were in a 20-by-20-foot space, according to CBS.

"I keep the bees like a dog or a pet," he told the Post.

But N.Y. police bee expert Detective Anthony Planakis said it was too many bees for such a small space. "Picture 45 dogs in one apartment," he said. "It's cruelty to the bees."

The stacks of hives were discovered by a real estate agent who was inspecting the house as the owner was putting it up for sale, the Post reports.

Neighbors said they had become? fed up with all the buzz because of the insects, and that the bees have, at times, attacked in swarms, according to CBS.

Beekeeping is legal in the city, however hives are supposed to be registered with the Health Department. Failure to register is punishable by a fine of up to $2,000 per hive.

So the owner in this case could be facing a pretty big $90,000 penalty.

And that might sting a little bit.

Nanoparticles reboot blood flow in brain

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? A nanoparticle developed at Rice University and tested in collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) may bring great benefits to the emergency treatment of brain-injury victims, even those with mild injuries.

Combined polyethylene glycol-hydrophilic carbon clusters (PEG-HCC), already being tested to enhance cancer treatment, are also adept antioxidants. In animal studies, injections of PEG-HCC during initial treatment after an injury helped restore balance to the brain's vascular system.

The results were reported this month in the American Chemical Society journal ACS Nano.

A PEG-HCC infusion that quickly stabilizes blood flow in the brain would be a significant advance for emergency care workers and battlefield medics, said Rice chemist and co-author James Tour.

"This might be a first line of defense against reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are always overstimulated during a medical trauma, whether that be to an accident victim or an injured soldier," said Tour, Rice's T.T. and W.F. Chao Chair in Chemistry as well as a professor of mechanical engineering and materials science and of computer science. "They're certainly exacerbated when there's trauma with massive blood loss."

In a traumatic brain injury, cells release an excessive amount of an ROS known as superoxide (SO) into the blood. Superoxides are toxic free radicals, molecules with one unpaired electron, that the immune system normally uses to kill invading microorganisms. Healthy organisms balance SO with superoxide dismutase (SOD), an enzyme that neutralizes it. But even mild brain trauma can release superoxides at levels that overwhelm the brain's natural defenses.

"Superoxide is the most deleterious of the reactive oxygen species, as it's the progenitor of many of the others," Tour said. "If you don't deal with SO, it forms peroxynitrite and hydrogen peroxide. SO is the upstream precursor to many of the downstream problems."

SO affects the autoregulatory mechanism that manages the sensitive circulation system in the brain. Normally, vessels dilate when blood pressure is low and constrict when high to maintain an equilibrium, but a lack of regulation can lead to brain damage beyond what may have been caused by the initial trauma.

"There are many facets of brain injury that ultimately determine how much damage there will be," said Thomas Kent, the paper's co-author, a BCM professor of neurology and chief of neurology at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston. "One is the initial injury, and that's pretty much done in minutes. But a number of things that happen later often make things worse, and that's when we can intervene."

Kent cited as an example the second burst of free radicals that can occur after post-injury resuscitation. "That's what we can treat: the further injury that happens because of the necessity of restoring somebody's blood pressure, which provides oxygen that leads to more damaging free radicals."

In tests, the researchers found PEG-HCC nanoparticles immediately and completely quenched superoxide activity and allowed the autoregulatory system to quickly regain its balance. Tour said ROS molecules readily combine with PEG-HCCs, generating "an innocuous carbon double bond, so it's really radical annihilation. There's no such mechanism in biology." While an SOD enzyme can alter only one superoxide molecule at a time, a single PEG-HCC about the size of a large protein at 2-3 nanometers wide and 30-40 nanometers long can quench hundreds or thousands. "This is an occasion where a nano-sized package is doing something that no small drug or protein could do, underscoring the efficacy of active nano-based drugs."

"This is the most remarkably effective thing I've ever seen," Kent said. "Literally within minutes of injecting it, the cerebral blood flow is back to normal, and we can keep it there with just a simple second injection. In the end, we've normalized the free radicals while preserving nitric oxide (which is essential to autoregulation). These particles showed the antioxidant mechanism we had previously identified as predictive of effectiveness."

The first clues to PEG-HCC's antioxidant powers came during nanoparticle toxicity studies with the MD Anderson Cancer Center. "We noticed they lowered alkaline phosphatase in the liver," Tour said. "One of our Baylor colleagues saw this and said, 'Hey, this looks like it's actually causing the liver cells to live longer than normal.'

"Oxidative destruction of liver cells is normal, so that got us to thinking these might be really good radical scavengers," Tour said.

Kent said the nanoparticles as tested showed no signs of toxicity, but any remaining concerns should be answered by further tests. The researchers found the half-life of PEG-HCCs in the blood -- the amount of time it takes for half the particles to leave the body -- to be between two and three hours. Tests with different cell types in vitro showed no toxicity, he said.

The research has implications for stroke victims and organ transplant patients as well, Tour said.

Next, the team hopes to have another lab replicate its positive results. "We've repeated it now three times, and we got the same results, so we're sure this works in our hands," Kent said.

First authors of the paper are BCM graduate student Brittany Bitner, Rice graduate student Daniela Marcano and former Rice postdoctoral researcher Jacob Berlin, now an assistant professor of molecular medicine at the Beckman Research Institute of the City of Hope, Duarte, Calif. Co-authors are all at BCM: Roderic Fabian, associate professor of neurology; Claudia Robertson, professor of neurosurgery; Leela Cherian, research instructor of neurosurgery; Mary Dickinson, associate professor of molecular physiology; Robia Pautler, associate professor of molecular physiology; and James Culver, a graduate student in molecular physiology.

The research was funded by the Department of Defense's Mission Connect Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Consortium, the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

Sikh temple shooting suspect identified as former Army soldier

The man suspected of opening fire on Sunday in a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., was identified as Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old former member of the U.S. Army, police said on Monday.

Seven people were killed, including the suspected gunman, in Sunday's shooting. The six victims identified by police--five men and one woman--ranged in age from 39 to 84.

A U.S. Army spokeswoman told Yahoo News that Page served from April 1992 until October 1998 as a member of the psychological operations unit. He was never deployed, but was awarded numerous medals, including two for good conduct and one for humanitarian service. Page, a Colorado native, received basic training in Fort Sill, Okla., moved to Fort Bliss in Texas and finished at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

A psychological operations specialist is "primarily responsible for the analysis, development and distribution of intelligence used for information and psychological effect," according to the U.S. Army website.

According to Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards, Lt. Brian Murphy, a 51-year-old officer, was the first to arrive at the temple shortly after 10:25 a.m. Sunday. He began to render aid to one of the victims in the parking lot when he was "ambushed," Edwards said.

Murphy was shot between 8 and 9 times at close range with a handgun, Edwards said. Other officers exchanged gunfire with Page after they arrived, Edwards said, killing him. The officers then found Murphy in the parking lot. "He waved them off, and told them to go into the temple to assist those in there," Edwards said.

Murphy was carried to a squad car and rushed to Milwaukee's Froedtert Hospital where he underwent surgery. Three of the shooting victims, including the officer, are listed in critical condition at the hospital.

Page was discharged from the army in 1998 for "patterns of misconduct," according to CNN, citing a Pentagon official. The U.S. Army spokeswoman would not confirm or deny the CNN report. Edwards said it was a "general discharge" and that Page was "ineligible for reenlistment."

Sources told ABC News the suspect was a "white supremacist" or "skinhead." And officials told NBC News he had "some kind of radical or white supremacist views," but was apparently not a member of any kind of radical organization. His past run-ins with law enforcement were described as minor.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Page "was a frustrated neo-Nazi who had been the leader of a racist white-power band." The band, called End Apathy, formed in 2005. According to the group's MySpace page, its music "is a sad commentary on our sick society and the problems that prevent true progress."

No motive for the suspect was released. Police searched the apartment of the suspected shooter early Monday looking for clues to his motive, Reuters reported.

There were initial, unconfirmed reports of multiple shooters and a hostage situation, though police said they believe Page was the lone shooter. Tactical units performed a three-square-mile grid search of the area around the temple.

Members of the temple described the gunman as a tall male with what appeared to be "a 9/11 tattoo." Officials told NBC News late Sunday that the suspect had many tattoos.

Law enforcement officials are treating the case as an "act of domestic terrorism," police said, and the FBI is leading the investigation.

Sunday's shooting came less than a month after the Aurora, Colo., theater massacre, where 12 people were killed and 58 wounded during a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises."

Sikhism is a 500-year-old monotheistic faith with about 27 million followers worldwide. Since 9/11, there have been more than 700 reports of hate-related incidents against Sikhs in the United States, according to the Associated Press. "Sikhs don't practice the same religion as Muslims," the AP noted, "but their long beards and turbans often cause them to be mistaken for Muslims, advocates say."

In Indian Kashmir, which has a large Sikh community, protesters blocked a national highway on Monday, Agence France-Presse reported, brandishing banners calling for stronger U.S. gun laws.

Immediately started typing this mail hoping for an answer to my problem. Am 22 years old. Finished college. Was an athlete since childhood. Was not really aware of the sunscreen at that time.

I am heavily tanned in my arms,feet and face. I was born very fair skinned. And now i would say i am wheat coloured.
The problem is i never gave much importance to the way my skin looked since i was acne prone all the time.. it was always disgusting
to see face with acne. And now since my college is over, no outdoor sports, and acne have gone by adopting good diet. Now i see that
there something like a dark brown pigmentation on my nose. Could see it if i watch my face really close. i have tried all applying curd, gram flour,
aloe vera, it doesnt seem to go. Can you please suggest something for this. I doubt if it is melasma on nose, since i have combination skin
and have oily nose,forehead and all these year i never bothered to go out in harsh sun(even without an umbrella).

And i have facial hair on upper lip, not very evident. So i use to bleach if i have any parties. I used to go for herbal products all the time.
It was working out fine. But i had to move to bangalore and i could not find any herbal products in my area. I gave a try on vlcc bleach.
Just before using it i had rubbed my face with a normal astringent. I made the mistake of applying the bleach after the astringent (though i waited for half an hour after washing the face, before applying the bleach). I never bleach my whole face. I use it just for the upper lips. I am aware it has chemicals and does bad for the skin. The part i had applied the bleach was slightly burning. I waited for 2 mintured, the burning never reduced. So washed it immediately.
I could see a dark black patch on the whole area where i had applied the bleach. started to panic seeing a dark black patch on the skin, took olive oil and massaged the place really well. I would say it had reduced the darkness. But is not gone fully. I have been to all the dermatologist lately and no creams seems to work wonders. Tried the above said home remedies for this as well. I applied indhulekha skin oil every night for the past 6 months. It lightens very slightly if i apply everyday. if i leave for 1 day, it will again be the same next day. i dont want to apply some oil everyday throughout my life. now i have stopped applying the oil, and the mark is again as it was before 6 months. Am so tired of seeing these marks on my face Please please please help me.
I dont really know what is to be done. Can you please help me.

8. Sir,I am 62 and suffering from IBS for the past 30 years. I have taken several treatments but none has worked so far. I pass out thrice or four times in the morning. My entire life has been spoiled because of this. MILWAUKEE ? One of Wisconsin?s most influential spiritual leaders, Catholic Archbishop Jerome Listecki reflected on Sunday?s shooting at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek with FOX6 News. Six individuals lost their lives, and the gunman, identified as 40-year-old Wade Michael Page was fatally shot by Oak Creek police at the scene. Three were critically wounded. The FBI is investigating the incident as a possible ?act of domestic terrorism.?

While officials have not released an official motive in the case, it appears Page may have been motivated by hatred. FOX6 News spoke with Archbishop Listecki regarding how a community can begin to heal after seeing that hate and evil are indeed real.

FOX6?s Mike Lowe: ?Archbishop, I wanted to begin with the shooting in Aurora Colorado. While difficult to understand, we can kind of rationalize it.? We see the pictures of the guy with crazy eyes, red hair and we see it as the sick work of a disturbed, detached, depressed guy. But when we hear about the reports of what happened in Oak Creek, it?s something different.? It seems like it?s organized hate. How does a community begin to grapple with that reality??

Archbishop Listecki: ?First of all, evil comes in all shapes and sizes ? from the almost insane shooting in Colorado to the calculated terrorist attack on a very peaceful people, the Sikhs, who all they wanted to do is worship.?

Mike Lowe: ?How do you go about identifying evil ? calling it out and eliminating it?

Archbishop Listecki: ?I think the very first thing is we recognize it, and we recognize that it exists. We have to be able to call it out, name it and in so doing, it?s a light that?s shined in this darkened area of our existence and culture, and that helps all of us to become safer.?

Mike Lowe: ?The Pope has talked about the ?clouds of evil overshadowing? parts of the earth.? Do you see our society as locked in almost existential struggle between good and evil??

Archbishop Listecki: ?One of the aspects that sometimes is missed and only reflected on is in the midst of the tragedy,? you had individuals who did heroic things.? Why?? They wanted to convince their brothers and sisters.? In the instance of the Sikh community, the leader of the community kind of grappling with this man to his own death, police officers who came out to defend, that?s really the best of us.?

Mike Lowe: ?Are there practical responses to this? For example, stricter gun control.? Is there a moral imperative in passing legislation like that??

Archbishop Listecki: ?That?s going to be left to the leaders and the politicians to be talking about that. What our job ? and any religious leader ? is to embrace their community and talk about the dignity of human life.? To hold up that dignity and make sure we support it.?
