Euro Heads Lower in Forex Trading | Oakshire Financial

Currency market news

Euro is heading lower in forex trading on the currency market, dropping as concerns about Spain overwhelm the markets.

Several Spanish regions are asking for funding help from Spain?s central government, prompting fears that Spain will become the fourth eurozone country to need a major bailout. The banking bailout approved recently doesn?t seem to be enough.

With Spanish bond yields rising, fears about Greece returning, and falling gold prices putting pressure on the euro, it is little surprise that the 17-nation currency is below 1.21. Concerns about what?s next are hitting markets hard, and the euro is slipping.

Strike threats loom over London Olympics

LONDON - Strikes by train drivers and passport officials threaten major disruptions to the London Olympics, prompting the government to warn unions on Thursday that they risked public anger if the industrial action went ahead.

In a blow on the sporting front, the Games lost one of their biggest draws when reigning tennis champion Rafa Nadal pulled out after failing to recover from injury in what he called "one of the saddest moments of my career."

The Aslef rail union announced on Thursday that 450 of its members in central England would walk out between Aug. 6 and 8 in a dispute over pensions, affecting passengers travelling from cities such as Sheffield, Nottingham and Derby to the capital.

The decision coincided with a move by border officials to strike on July 26, the day before the start of the Games, potentially delaying thousands of visitors arriving for the showpiece event.

"They are holding a strike on what is one of the key days for people coming into this country for the Olympic Games," Home Secretary Theresa May said.

"They risk damaging people's enjoyment of coming through into the UK," she told Sky News. "We will of course put contingency arrangements in place to ensure we can deal with people coming into the country as smoothly as possible."

The threat of transport chaos added to pressure on the government, which has already had to call in thousands of extra soldiers to guard the Games after a failed private sector recruitment drive left an embarrassing hole in security.

The wet weather, too, has dampened spirits ahead of the sporting showcase, which has earned the nickname the "Soggy Olympics" in the British media.

Perhaps it was no coincidence that Police lyrics "sending out an SOS", from the song "Message in a Bottle", blared out before the daily news conference at the Olympic Park in east London.

"PRETTY SMOOTH"

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt rejected accusations that the buildup to the Games had been a shambles, arguing that for such a major operation preparations had been remarkably smooth.

"Actually I think it has been a very smooth process," he told reporters, after a barrage of questions on issues ranging from security shortfalls to sanitation at the main Olympic site. "I think it has been an encouraging first week.

"I think it is very important that people understand that of course you are going to have a few hitches on a project of this scale, but actually things have gone pretty smoothly, and the athletes are getting a fantastic welcome in the village, and I think morale is very high."

On the issue of the strikes, he said "It would be completely out of tune with the mood of the British public. This is a moment when Britain wants to show its best face to the world, and that is what the vast majority of the public wants as well.

"I would strongly counsel any unions thinking of disrupting this very important period, I think they would lose huge amounts of public support if they really tried to do this."

The security glitch came after G4S said it could not provide a promised 10,400 security guards to staff Games venues, forcing the Defence Ministry to call up an extra 3,500 troops to take the armed forces contribution to 17,000.

A further 2,000 troops may be required if G4S fails to find a minimum requirement of 7,000 staff, and on Thursday the government said 1,200 soldiers had been put on standby as a precaution.

Hunt reiterated government assurances that the Games would be safe in a city where suicide bombers killed 52 people in attacks on the transport system in July 2005.

Wednesday's suicide bomb attack on a bus carrying Israeli tourists at Burgas airport in Bulgaria could raise further concerns.

"Obviously we are monitoring the whole time what's happening with respect to the changing security situation, and we have extremely competent intelligence services who are giving us advice and we are responding to that on an ongoing basis," Hunt said when asked about the Burgas attack.

"The world can be absolutely certain that we will deliver a safe and secure Olympics. It has always been our number one priority."

OPENING CEREMONY

With the Games eight days away, British media has focused heavily on the opening ceremony amid reports of tension between Oscar-winning film director Danny Boyle, who is overseeing the 27 million pound ($42 million) show, and the Olympic Broadcasting Services in charge of airing the Games.

According to the Guardian newspaper, quoting an unnamed source, the atmosphere between the two was "miserable" and rehearsals were behind schedule.

The July 27 evening ceremony, to be watched by a global audience estimated at more than a billion people, has already been shortened to avoid a possible late-night rush for trains and buses home.

"I think I would expect there to be lots of negotiations going on behind the scenes, but I think the overall picture is very encouraging," Hunt said, explaining that he was not aware of the specific problems being reported.

"I think it is going to be a sensational opening ceremony. It will show the best of Britain - its history, its culture, our contribution to the world."

The ceremony will feature more than 10,000 performers and include the recreation of an idyllic English rural scene complete with live animals.

But missing from the athletes' parade at the show will be Spain's Nadal, who won gold in Beijing four years ago and had been expected to carry his nation's flag.

Delta passenger thought needle was a toothpick

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Jim Tonjes was high above North America when he bit into a hot turkey sandwich aboard a Delta Air Lines flight and felt a sudden jab in his mouth.

Glancing down, he noticed what looked like a sewing needle in the food. Another passenger on the plane reported the same thing.

At first, he thought a toothpick meant to hold the sandwich together had punctured the roof of his mouth. When he pulled it out, "it was a straight needle, about one inch long, with sharp points on both ends."

Now U.S. and European authorities are trying to determine how the needles got into meals served on at least four Delta flights from Amsterdam to the U.S. and why anyone would place them there.

"We are keeping all options open because at this moment, we have no idea why somebody or something put needles inside the sandwiches," said Robert van Kapel, a spokesman for Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.

The FBI and the airport's police department have opened criminal investigations. The U.S. Transportation Security Administration said it does not view the matter as a national security threat.

A Delta spokeswoman said the needles were found Sunday in six sandwiches on four flights. Passengers discovered four of them. The flights included one to Minneapolis, one to Seattle and two to Atlanta.

Tonjes was returning after a visit to Amsterdam for his mother-in-law's 90th birthday. The nine-hour flight was about 90 minutes from Minneapolis when flight attendants offered Tonjes, who was seated in business class, a cold Mediterranean salad or the hot turkey sandwich.

"I'll be very honest, the first bite, I thought, 'Boy, this is pretty good,'" Tonjes said. "It was the second bite that got me."

Now Tonjes is on a 28-day course of pills (at a cost of $1,400) aimed at warding off any infection, including hepatitis or HIV. His doctors have asked the FBI to tell them right away if they find any residue on the needle.

The sandwiches were made by Gate Gourmet, one of the world's largest airline caterers, with facilities on five continents.

The company serves many airlines, but only Delta flights appeared to be affected. The company said it was investigating. Spokesman David Fisher declined to elaborate.

Delta Air Lines Inc. spokeswoman Kristin Baur said security has been stepped up at all of the Gate Gourmet facilities used by the airline. Delta is also using more prepackaged food.

Gate Gourmet was founded in 1992 to cater Swissair flights and grew by taking over other airline caterers, including that of British Airways. It went into private ownership in 2003.

Even though U.S. airlines no longer serve free meals in coach on domestic flights, the airline catering business is still a big industry. Gate Gourmet provides food for 9,700 flights per day. That's 250 million meals a year from 122 flight kitchens.

Those kitchens are often not on airport grounds, so meals are taken by truck to a "sterile" area where planes are parked. The TSA monitors the area in the U.S. Local authorities monitor it at overseas airports.

"Food delivery to airports is a very strict process," said Erroll Southers, a former FBI agent who was the chief of Homeland Security and Intelligence for the police department at Los Angeles World Airports. Truck drivers get background checks, and "those trucks are inspected for everything from sealed packages to explosive devices," said Southers, who is also managing director of counter-terrorism at TAL Global Corp., an international security consulting service.

The needles are a reminder that insiders ? people who work within the industry and have passed a background check ? are among the biggest threats to aviation security, Southers said.

Gate Gourmet's ads for cooks say applicants must be able to pass a criminal background check. The TSA declined to discuss the security process.

Ton Scherrenberg, chairman of the VNC union that represents some 7,000 Dutch cabin personnel, said cabin crews check prepared food for foreign objects when they open catering packages, "but you can't check every single sandwich."

When the needles were discovered on the first Delta flight, a message went out to other Delta flights, which is why some of the needles were found before they got to passengers. The TSA said it "immediately notified all U.S. air carriers with flights from Schiphol to ensure awareness."

On board Tonjes' flight, he pushed the flight attendant call button as soon as he found his needle. A few minutes later, another passenger nearby did the same thing. He said flight attendants offered to call ahead for an ambulance.

"When we landed, it was very, very impressive. When they opened the door, it was flooded with customs agents, police, paramedics and firefighters. It was the whole jetway full of people."

The FBI interviewed him for about three hours. He said he was told the remaining sandwiches were X-rayed, and a third needle was found.

Gate Gourmet was cited by the FDA in 2005 for failing to keep meat at proper temperatures and for the presence of live flies and roaches near its salad production area, plus other violations.

Roy Costa, who runs food safety consulting firm Environ Health Associates in Deland, Fla., and used to be an auditor with the Department of Health and Human Services for more than 20 years, said food preparation standards are not as tight in Europe as in the U.S.

"Everything we do over here, we do because the (Food and Drug Administration) requires it," he said. "There's just a huge hole there."

Cronyism and outsourcing: Romney, Obama trade jabs

(AP) ? Using unusually vivid language, Mitt Romney tried to take the political offensive against President Barack Obama on Monday, accusing Obama of cronyism that "stinks" in steering federal contracts to supporters. He also dropped hints through a spokesman that a vice presidential pick could come any day.

Unfazed, Obama needled his Republican rival for finally having a job-creation plan ? for people overseas.

At the same time, though Romney endeavored to switch the campaign focus, questions about his tenure at Bain Capital, a venture capital company, seemed destined to shape the conversation at least a while longer. On a day devoted mainly to raising money, Romney went on Fox News to complain that all Obama can do "is attack me" on Bain and other subjects rather than taking useful steps to improve the economy.

Sure enough, the Democratic incumbent showed no sign of letting up.

Rallying for support in crucial Ohio, Obama said Romney's proposal to free companies from taxes on their foreign holdings would displace American workers. The president cited a study he said concluded that "Gov. Romney's economic plan would in fact create 800,000 jobs. There's only one problem, the jobs wouldn't be in America."

Romney's campaign, itself moving to the attack, contended that Obama's Energy Department has steered loans and grants to several companies connected to the president's political supporters.

Romney, speaking to donors in Baton Rouge, La., said Obama had a policy of "taking your tax dollars and putting it in businesses owned by contributors to his campaign. And that is smelly at best. It stinks."

Romney aides cited some well-known cases, such as Solyndra, a California solar energy company that went bankrupt, and some less-publicized cases. They include Westly Group, a venture capital firm whose affiliated companies have received federal loans and grants.

Steve Westly, the company's founder, is a major Obama campaign fundraiser.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the Energy Department's decisions "were made without regard to political connections." She said some grants have gone to projects with "just as robust connections to Republican campaigns and donors."

While Obama held a freewheeling town hall in Ohio, Romney raised money in the safely GOP states of Louisiana and Mississippi.

Addressing another major election point of interest, top Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom told The Associated Press that the campaign may announce a vice presidential choice by the end of the week. That would be sooner than many have expected, and some Democrats suggested it was another effort to turn attention from Bain.

The timing was far from certain. Asked whether the announcement could come this week, Fehrnstrom said: "Technically it could, but the governor hasn't made a decision."

The past several days of the campaign have centered on Romney's former work at Bain Capital and whether he has been straightforward about the timing of his departure, a line of attack that Obama is exploiting to try to undermine public support in Romney's business credentials and trustworthiness. Obama assailed Romney's tax plans for U.S. businesses on Monday.

At his Ohio event, Obama cited an article in the publication Tax Notes suggesting Romney's tax proposals would encourage U.S. companies to create up to 800,000 jobs overseas. Romney supports "a territorial tax system," which would allow overseas profits made by U.S. companies to avoid federal taxation.

Romney's campaign cited campaign disclosure reports showing that the article's author, Reed College economist Kimberly A. Clausing, has donated money to Obama's campaign. Republicans say Romney's overall tax proposals would encourage greater job growth at home.

Romney "has a comprehensive plan to reform the corporate tax code that will lower rates, get rid of incentives for firms to create jobs in other countries, and encourage the kind of economic growth President Obama has been unable to deliver," said campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg.

For all the tax talk, the presidential campaign couldn't seem to shake Bain, the company that Romney led in the 1990s to numerous successful corporate restructurings, and to some less happy ventures that ended in bankruptcy or other problems.

Romney has said he left Bain in early 1999, shortly before it invested in companies that were pioneers of job outsourcing. Romney says he played no role in those transactions and decisions.

Two years later, however, Bain was still filing disclosure documents with the Securities and Exchange Commission that named Romney as the firm's CEO, president, sole shareholder and "the controlling person." At least one document in early 2001 said Romney's "principal occupation" was as Bain's managing director.

Bain says it took some time for disclosure forms to catch up with management changes at the firm. Romney says he was working fulltime on the Winter Olympic Games starting in early 1999. Democrats say Romney has yet to satisfactorily explain.

Romney traveled to Louisiana to attend a private fundraiser alongside Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who is among those on Romney's short list for vice president. Romney raised an estimated $2 million at the event, where 40 donors paid $50,000 to attend.

Jindal has been campaigning aggressively for Romney in recent weeks, as have others thought to be under consideration. They include Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

Obama raised at least $625,000 at his own fundraiser at the Cincinnati Music Hall before his public appearance.

While Romney and pro-Republican "super PACs" are raising huge sums, campaign laws place limits on how much Romney can spend before the late-summer nominating conventions take place. Meanwhile, Obama has outspent Romney in some key states.

Feds expanding access to data for voter purging

(AP) ? The federal government is expanding access to an immigration database so that several states can use it to cleanse voter rolls, officials said Monday.

Homeland Security Department representatives first notified Florida officials last week that they could check to see if registered voters are actually noncitizens who should not be eligible to cast a ballot. State officials said Monday that the department is now offering similar access to other states who had been requesting the information.

"I'm pleased that DHS has agreed to work with states to verify the citizenship of people on the voter rolls and help reduce our vulnerability," said Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler, who had renewed his request for the data last week, writing a letter with the support of several other states.

Elections leaders in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio and Utah had signed onto Gessler's request. Five of the states ? Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, New Mexico and Ohio ? are expected to be competitive in the 2012 presidential race. Each of the election chiefs in those states are Republican.

The data work is supposed to help states identify people who may be legal residents but not citizens. Since states can't monitor whether someone has become a citizen, the federal database will allow them to check the immigration status of those people.

Colorado has identified some 5,000 people that it wants to check.

The Obama administration had denied Florida's request for database access amid an escalating legal battle with Florida about how it was handling its voter list. A U.S. judge blocked federal attempts to stop Florida's voter review, and the federal government then relented on the database question.

Washington state has been requesting the data since back to the Bush administration. Shane Hamlin, the co-director of elections in Washington, said state officials aren't getting full access to the database that they had sought but that they were pleased with the development.

To check against the database, states will have to provide a "unique identifier," such as an "alien number," for each person in question. Alien numbers generally are assigned to foreigners living in the country legally, often with visas or other permits such as green cards.

The database isn't likely to catch illegal immigrants who may have managed to get on the voter rolls, since those individuals likely wouldn't have an alien number.

Voting groups are concerned that the erroneous voter purges right now could make it difficult to correct mistakes in time for the election.

A baby shower done with love? (sacramento baby photographer ...

I just wanted to share some photos I took of my sister?s baby shower done back in May. Her shower was sweetly simple with lots of desserts, guests and decorations with a personal touch interspersed around the house. I wanted to make sure my sister had a wonderful time, and I am certain she did. Over 30 people crammed in my tiny home and celebrated the baby boy that will be joining her family very soon. My sister is so loved and so is that baby! Now I am not crafty, or a decorator or a product photographer either! But I can tell you that everything that was done, was done with love :)

Report: Countrywide won influence with discounts

(AP) ? The former Countrywide Financial Corp., whose subprime loans helped start the nation's foreclosure crisis, made hundreds of discount loans to buy influence with members of Congress, congressional staff, top government officials and executives of troubled mortgage giant Fannie Mae, according to a House report.

The report, obtained by The Associated Press, said that the discounts ? from January 1996 to June 2008, were not only aimed at gaining influence for the company but to help mortgage giant Fannie Mae. Countrywide's business depended largely on Fannie, which at the time was trying to fend off more government regulation but eventually had to come under government control.

Fannie was responsible for purchasing a large volume of Countrywide's subprime mortgages. Countrywide was taken over by Bank of America in January 2008, relieving the financial services industry and regulators from the messy task of cleaning up the bankruptcy of a company that was servicing 9 million U.S. home loans worth $1.5 trillion at a time when the nation faced a widening credit crisis, massive foreclosures and an economic downturn.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee also named six current and former members of Congress who received discount loans, but all of their names had surfaced previously. Other previously mentioned names included former top executive branch officials and three chief executives of Fannie Mae.

"Documents and testimony obtained by the committee show the VIP loan program was a tool used by Countrywide to build goodwill with lawmakers and other individuals positioned to benefit the company," the report said. "In the years that led up to the 2007 housing market decline, Countrywide VIPs were positioned to affect dozens of pieces of legislation that would have reformed Fannie" and its rival Freddie Mac, the committee said.

Some of the discounts were ordered personally by former Countrywide chief executive Angelo Mozilo. Those recipients were known as "Friends of Angelo."

The Justice Department has not prosecuted any Countrywide official, but the House committee's report said documents and testimony show that Mozilo and company lobbyists "may have skirted the federal bribery statute by keeping conversations about discounts and other forms of preferential treatment internal. Rather than making quid pro quo arrangements with lawmakers and staff, Countrywide used the VIP loan program to cast a wide net of influence."

The Securities and Exchange Commission in October 2010 slapped Mozilo with a $22.5 million penalty to settle charges that he and two other former Countrywide executives misled investors as the subprime mortgage crisis began. Mozilo also was banned from ever again serving as an officer or director of a publicly traded company.

He also agreed to pay another $45 million to settle other violations for a total settlement of $67.5 million that was to be returned to investors who were harmed.

The report said that until the housing market became swamped with foreclosures, "Countrywide's effort to build goodwill on Capitol Hill worked."

The company became a trusted adviser in Congress and was consulted when the House Financial Services Committee and Senate Banking Committee considered reform of Fannie and Freddie and unfair lending practices.

"If Countrywide's lobbyists, and Mozilo himself, were more strictly prohibited from arranging preferential treatment for members of Congress and congressional staff, it is possible that efforts to reform (Fannie and Freddie) would have been met with less resistance," the report said.

The report said Fannie assigned as many as 70 lobbyists to the Financial Services Committee while it considered legislation to reform the company from 2000 to 2005. Four reform bills were introduced in the House during the period, and none made it out of the committee.

Hit with staggering losses, Fannie and Freddie came under government control in September 2008. As of Dec. 31, 2011, the Treasury Department had committed over $183 billion to support the two companies ? and there's no end in sight.

Among those who received loan discounts from Countrywide, the report said, were:

?Former Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd, D-Conn.

?Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad, D-N.D.

?Mary Jane Collipriest, who was communications director for former Sen. Robert Bennett, R-Utah, then a member of the Banking Committee. The report said Dodd referred Collipriest to Countrywide's VIP unit. Dodd, when commenting on his own loans, has said he was unaware of the discount program.

?Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.

?Rep. Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y., former chairman of the Oversight Committee. Towns issued the first subpoena to Bank of America for Countrywide documents, and current Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., subpoenaed more documents. The committee said that in responding to the Towns subpoena, Bank of America left out documents related to his Towns' loan.

?Rep. Elton Gallegly, R-Calif.

?Top staff members of the House Financial Services Committee.

?A staff member of Rep. Ruben Hinojosa, D-Texas, a member of the Financial Services Committee.

?Former Rep. Tom Campbell, R-Calif.

?Former Housing and Urban Development Secretaries Alphonso Jackson and Henry Cisneros; former Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala. The VIP unit processed Cisneros's loan after he joined Fannie's board of directors.

?Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, was an exception. He told the VIP unit not to give him a discount, and he did not receive one.

?Former heads of Fannie Mae James Johnson, Daniel Mudd and Franklin Raines. Countrywide took a loss on Mudd's loan. Fannie employees were the most frequent recipients of VIP loans. Johnson received a discount after Mozilo waived problems with his credit rating.

The report said Mozilo "ordered the loan approved, and gave Johnson a break. He instructed the VIP unit: 'Charge him ? under prime. Don't worry about (the credit score). He is constantly on the road and therefore pays his bills on an irregular basis but he ultimately pays them."

Johnson in 2008 resigned as a leader of then-candidate Barack Obama's vice presidential search committee after The Wall Street Journal reported he had received $7 million in Countrywide discounted loans.

The report said those who received the discounts knew the loans were handled by a special VIP unit.

"The documents produced by the bank show that VIP borrowers received paperwork from Countrywide that clearly identified the VIP unit as the point of contact," the committee said.

The standard discount was .5 waived points. Countrywide also waived junk fees that usually ranged from $350 to $400.

Theorist Peter Higgs lives to see his boson

Peter Higgs was no good in the lab, but he never doubted that one day his theory of a powerful subatomic particle that bears his name would be proven right in practice. His surprise was that he lived to see that day.

Speaking at Geneva's CERN research center on Wednesday after experimental physicists announced the discovery of a new particle, a boson much as Higgs imagined half a century ago, he confessed to Reuters he felt "rather dazed but very pleased."

As a schoolboy in Bristol in the southwest of England, the now 83-year-old Higgs admitted to being "incompetent" at science in the laboratory. He went on, however, to specialize in the theoretical realm, applying mathematics to exploring the outer reaches of our understanding of the universe that makes us.

One paper he dispatched from Edinburgh University in 1964, as he was formulating a theory of an elusive particle to explain how an ordered universe emerged from Big Bang, was rejected by an academic physics journal edited at CERN.

But he gave no sign of bearing a grudge when he spent the day at the institution watching its experimental experts vindicate him.

"For me personally it is just the confirmation of something I did 48 years ago, and it is very satisfying to be proved right in some way," Higgs said in the interview. "I haven't been dreaming about it for 48 years because I had other things to do with my life. At the beginning, I had no expectation that I would still be alive when it happened."

That experimental proof had been delivered in his own lifetime was, he said, "incredible," and he suggested the moment would have greatly surprised his early science teachers: "I certainly did some lab work as a schoolboy in Bristol. I was incompetent," he said, a boyish grin flitting across his round face.

For nearly three decades, physicists at CERN and at the Fermilab research center in Illinois had tried to find what became known as the "Higgs boson" in particle colliders creating mini- explosions duplicating the big bang of 13.7 billion years ago.

The physicists hedged its bets in their report on Wednesday, and held back on claiming it had discovered the Higgs until they had time to "get inside" it, but they were sure they had found a new particle.

No hint of resentment
The rotund, bespectacled theoretical physicist, who for many years held a professorial chair at Edinburgh University, gave no hint of schadenfreude over the fact that his original idea was rejected by a CERN journal as being "of no relevance to physics."

"What I did 48 years ago wasn't very specific," he said. Earlier, at a news conference, he had refused to get into what his feelings were. "This day belongs to CERN and the people who work here," he insisted.

    1. Higgs boson quest turns up new particle

Scientists say they've discovered a type of particle that's never been seen before ? a particle that mostly matches the description of the fabled Higgs boson.

    4. Really? Mermaids don't exist, NOAA website notes

Higgs, who has strong views on what is good and bad about science and resigned from a movement for nuclear disarmament when it began campaigning against the harnessing of nuclear energy, makes clear he has no religious faith.

He said he was not worried by the fact that it was not yet finally established whether the new boson ? sometimes dubbed, to his disgust and that of all CERN scientists, "the God particle" ? was exactly as he conceived it.

His vision of a particle linked to a force field that attracted the flying debris of the big bang and turned it into stars, planets and galaxies "was about a type of theory, and I'm not particularly bothered if this is a single Higgs boson or one of several," he told Reuters.

But, he added, it would be "rather surprising" if study of the new boson over the coming months in CERN's Large Hadron Collider showed "deviations from the expectations for the properties of any kind of Higgs boson."

CERN experts say that if such a scenario ? discovery that the new boson was something totally outside their expectations ? were to unfold, the whole modern concept of how the universe works would have to be reviewed.

End of an era? Or a beginning?
The Higgs, in its basic form, has long been seen as filling in the last major gap in the so-called Standard Model of physics. That model, drawn up in the 1970s, describes the way the universe works at the most elementary level.

"From the point of view of future physics," said the scientist, "it seems to me that in one way it is the end of an era in that it appears to complete the Standard Model. But the more important thing is that studying it [the new particle] will lead onto what lies beyond that model which we hope will have more interesting connections with cosmology, the dark matter problem and that sort of thing."

CERN physicists say the finding of the boson ? widely hailed as the biggest advance in knowledge about the cosmos for over 30 years ? will open the door to probing this and other ideas that were once the stuff of science fiction.

Gravity remains unexplained outside the model, although it is the force that created the black holes at the center of galaxies and elsewhere in the universe.

Other concepts that scientists say could now be examined more closely are supersymmetry, the idea that all particles have a much heavier counterpart; the dark matter believed to make up about 23 percent of the universe but cannot be seen; and the dark energy that constitutes anotgher 72 percent.

"You may call it science fiction, but to me these are speculative theories which have been around for quite some time, and it's only now they are beginning to be tested," said Higgs.

"As with the Higgs boson, there's a lot of theoretical motivation for some parts of these theories to be true, in particular supersymmetry, which I think most people would say is a necessary feature of any theory that is going to unify the Standard Model with gravity.

"If we don't unify these theories with gravity, there is something very funny going on, because gravity on its own doesn't fit in properly with quantum theory" ? the overriding theory of the nature of matter which evolved in the first half of the 20th century.

Super Healthy You - A Spicy Perspective

I?d like to share something a little off-topic today? about fitness.

No, I?m not a personal trainer,? nor a nutritionist. I?m just a mid-thirties mom who cares greatly about health and feeling good in my clothes.

I am also not one of those girls with superior athletic genes and legs up to her eyeballs. I?m 5 foot 4, and have a low-average metabolism and very curvacious genes. (And sometimes jeans.)

And I love to eat.

I mean I really LOVE to eat. I?m pretty sure, more than a normal person. Ethnic food. Comfort food. Sweets. I love it all.

I do however feel like I have a lot to share about health and fitness based on years of research and personal experimentation.

If there is a health book, I?ve read it.

If there is a fitness program, I?ve ?pumped? it.

If there is a diet plan, I?ve tried it.

Always curious about the latest fitness-science update, I?ve done it all. Seriously, you probably couldn?t name one book/workout routine/diet plan my husband and I have not put to the test.

?

A very small sampling of the fitness paraphernalia we own.

Of all the programs I?ve done in the last twenty years, here are some principles that I feel are tried-and-true. Things you can count on to lose weight, stay trim and feel healthy.

Plus you can apply them to whatever diet and fitness plan you want. This is not a system. I?ve simply put together 6 principles that work.

Whenever I stray from these principles, I gain weight. Whenever I stick to them, I lose weight. Period.

Here we go?

SIX FAIL-PROOF TIPS TO GET FIT:

1. YOU MUST SET REASONABLE AND SPECIFIC GOALS. Unrealistic goals like losing 50 pounds in the next two months only leads to an eating disorder or heartbreak. Vague goals get you nowhere.

Decide what is reasonable and write out a plan to get there. Then find a way to track it. Use good ol? paper and pencil, a spread sheet or try a fitness app for tracking your progress.

Tracking creates accountability. Accountability = results.

2. EAT CLEAN 90-95% OF THE TIME and allow for splurges the other 5-10 percent. Whatever your diet:? high protein, low carb, dairy free, vegan, gluten free, grain free, whole grain, you name it. EAT CLEAN.

Clean means a whole lots of veggies, and very little (or no) processed foods.

Steer clear of white processed foods and sugar, and eat only:? lean protein, legumes, grains, fruit, low fat dairy and TONS of veggies 90-95% of the time. The other 5-10% of the time you can splurge. (You have to find the right percentage for you. Certain people can splurge a little more than others and still lose weight.)

Out of approximately 35 meals and snacks a week, somewhere between 2-4 of them can be really naughty.

Some people like to spread out their splurges. For me, it?s much easier to control myself, if I save them up for one glorious cheat day.

?

3. LEARN PORTION CONTROL. Even if you eat clean all the time, you can still overeat. You may not gain weight, but you certainly won?t lose it. We Americans are notorious for over eating. Our restaurant portions are huge, and if we happen to get served a properly sized portion, we feel like we?re getting ripped off.

A few years back I got braces on my teeth. I did not change my diet at all, yet having braces made me lose weight.

Why? Because apparently I ate too much.

I didn?t think I ate to much. I thought I watched my portion sizes. But when my teeth were sore, I ate less and I ate slower.? And low-and-behold was able to loss the weight from my second child that I couldn?t previously shed.

After a week or two of smaller portions, my appetite adjusted and they seemed normal.

Smaller portions mean smaller waste line. Click Here for tips to help with portion control.

4. WORKOUT LIKE YOU MEAN IT. Set time aside for regular workouts, and don?t pussyfoot around.

Half-way workouts get half-way results. Always.

To get REAL results, you can?t just take a casual walk or prance around on the elliptical machine for 15 minutes.

You Must Sweat.

Huff.

Grunt.

Wheeze.

Hack and Spit, if you need to.

Your face should look like a red and white panda when you?re finished.

A rule of thumb: If you feel like you are going to vomit when your workout is over, you?ve done good.

Don?t worry about looking cute; this is the time to focus on making your body do what you want it to do. I promise you will look cute later.

It?s too easy to find an ?important reason? why you can?t fit your workout in today. It?s too easy to start a hard workout and give up 10 minutes in, saying ?at least I did something.?

Always up the anti. Your mind will whine and complain, but your willpower MUST win. Drowned out the negative thoughts so you can reach your goals.

When I run, instead of allowing myself to start? thinking I?ve done enough, I always set mini goals along the way. ?I?m going to power past that big tree. Now I?m going to blow past that stop sign? and now that lamppost way up there.?

You empower yourself in major way, when you refuse to allow excuses. You change your mindset from a place of settling to a place of success.

?

5. CHANGE YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE EVERY 6-9 WEEKS. This might be the most important thing.

After a certain amount of time, our bodies? get in a rut with our workout routine. We want to continue doing the same workout, in hopes the results will magically appear again. However, your body grows accustom to your current workout program and hits a Plataeau. Meaning stagnant results.

If you are a runner, and used to see huge results but now you don?t, stop running for a while. Find another workout routine that challenges you. If you?ve been doing circuit training and no longer see results, become a runner? Or biker, or P90Xer, or weightlifter, or cross-country skier, etc.

It?s great to have options in the back of your mind. That way, the moment you stop seeing result in your current workout plan,? you can make a change and shock your body back into weight loss mode.

P.S. You can always go back to your favorites after a few cycles. Just be aware that subconsciously, they are probably your favorites because they don?t challenge you as much. Usually the workout you love-to-hate, has the biggest impact on your body. Sad, but true.

6. DRINK LOADS OF WATER and not a lot of anything else. Make it a goal to drink a gallon of water a day.

Water not only keeps you hydrated after hard workouts, it flushes your body, reducing toxins and bloating. Water also helps keep your tummy full so you don?t overeat.

Get yourself a big jug to carry around as your constant water reminder. I have one I fill up twice a day. When I have it with me, I always take in more than enough water. When I forget it, I feel dehydrated and puffy by the end of the day.

If your body tends to retain water. Try these detox waters to help flush your system.

Dandelion Tea Detox Water

Spicy Lemon Detox Water

Grapefruit Detox Water

?

?

Finally,

I?ll say it again, I don?t always do these things.

Sometimes I get lazy. I tell myself life it too hard, stressful, and fast pace to focus on my health. I tell myself I deserve a break.

Then I don?t push hard in my workouts. I make excuse and have more spurge meals than I should.? I?m not attentive to my health.

Inevitably, I gain weight and feel lethargic?making it even harder to get motivated again.

But I promise you, when I or anyone else I know, does these six things consistently, they see and feel physical change. And feeling the change is the best part of all!

(AP) ? A Soyuz space capsule carrying a three-man multinational crew touched down safely Sunday on the southern steppes of Kazakhstan, bringing an end to their 193-day mission to the International Space Station.

Around a dozen recovery helicopters zeroed into the vast uncultivated land mass, where NASA astronaut Donald Pettit, Russia's Oleg Kononenko and Dutchman Andre Kuipers landed in the Russian-made capsule.

Russian space officials quickly surrounded the craft, which performed a perfect upright textbook landing, and erected ladders to begin the process of pulling out the astronauts.

The voyage from the space station started 3 -1/2 hours earlier, when it undocked and began a slow, gentle drift away. It made a perfect landing in the still and summery weather at 2:14 pm local time (08:17 GMT), right on schedule.

Commenting on the landing, NASA TV reporter Rob Navias described it as "a bullseye."

Kononenko was the first to be extracted from the descent module. He looked pale and tired, but medical staff announced him healthy. Pettit, second out of the module, was heard to say: "It's good to be home."

The three men were hoisted into recliners and posed for photos for a number of minutes before being carried into a tent for further checks.

Writing on his NASA blog on the eve of his departure from the space station, Petit write: "I only hope that my small efforts here, perhaps adding one grain of sand to the beach of knowledge, will help enable a generation of people in the future to call space 'home.'"

Petit and his colleagues were part of the team that handled the arrival to the space station last month of the privately owned SpaceX Dragon capsule. That became the first private delivery to the International Space Station.

The retirement of the U.S. shuttle fleet has left Russia's venerable Soyuz spacecraft as the only means to deliver crews to the orbiting laboratory.

Russians Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin and U.S. astronaut Joseph Acaba are expected to remain onboard the orbiting space station for a further three months.

They will be joined later this month by NASA astronaut Suni Williams, Russia's Yury Malenchenko and Japanese astronaut Aki Hoshide, who are set to take off on a Soyuz spaceship from the Baikonur cosmodrome in southern Kazakhstan.
