Blast in southeast Turkey kills 1, wounds 27 (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? An explosion apparently targeting a police car killed one civilian and wounded 27 people, including seven police officers, in a mostly Kurdish city of Turkey on Thursday, an official said.

The private Dogan news agency said police had to use tear gas to disperse an angry crowd that gathered at the scene of the blast in the city of Hakkari.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the explosion, but Kurdish rebels who are fighting for autonomy in the region have used roadside bombings against military and police vehicles there in the past.

Gov. Muammer Turker told Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency that the explosion occurred on a busy street in the southeastern city as the police vehicle was driving by.

The blast wounded a total of 28 people, including seven policemen, and one of the civilians died at the hospital, Turker said.

TRT, Turkey's state-run television, said the explosion was caused by a roadside bomb targeting police. The pro-Kurdish news agency, Firat, said the explosion was caused by a bomb that formed a large crater on the ground and shattered the surrounding buildings' windows.

Kurdish rebels, who belong to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, have been branded as terrorists by the U.S. and the European Union. Tens of thousands of people have died during their battle for independence since 1984.

Samsung: One In Ten South Koreans Now Owns A Samsung Galaxy S II

White Galaxy S2 3It's not really news to say that the Galaxy S II is a hit, but it has actually become a mega hit in South Korea. According to maker Samsung, the Android handset has been sold a whopping 5 million times in its domestic market since release at the end of April 2011. In other words, a little more than 10% of the country's entire population (48 million people) are now proud owners of the phone. It's the first cell phone that has reached this milestone in mobile-crazy South Korea, according to Japanese business daily The Nikkei. The paper also says that one out of four South Korean smartphones users owns a Galaxy S II (sounds like feature phones don't play a big role in that country anymore).

Seattle braces for "Snowmageddon" (Reuters)

SEATTLE (Reuters) ? Seattle residents on Tuesday braced for an epic storm, expected to drop up to 10 inches of snow and nicknamed "Snowmageddon" for the havoc it was expected to wreak on the region.

The prediction prompted residents of the city, who rarely see such heavy snowfall, to stock up on essential supplies in case of power outages and road closures.

"People are coming in for the basics -- bread, milk, canned goods, shovels and (tire) chains," said Melinda Merrill, spokeswoman for the Fred Meyer and QFC supermarket chains, both owned by the Kroger Co. "People are kind of getting ready to hunker down for a bit."

Forecasters said the storm will likely first hit Seattle around midnight, and they expect it will be a substantial amount of snow for usually temperate Seattle.

"The number is five to 10 inches in Seattle, with 12 to 18 inches near the Olympic Mountains," said National Weather Service meteorologist Brad Colman. "As you head further west from Seattle, you'll get a little more snow.'

Although earlier predictions had rain moving in by Wednesday evening to melt the snow, forecasters now believe temperatures will stay cold through Thursday with a second, weaker storm dropping another inch of snow.

Seattle usually averages just six to seven inches of snow each year, Colman said.

"It's usually a few inches here and a few inches there. If we were to get up to 10 inches, that would put it in the top 10 snowfalls ever here," he said.

The record for Seattle is 21.5 inches in 24 hours, set in 1916, he said.

Residents and broadcasters have taken to calling the approaching storm "Snowmageddon."

The Seattle School District cancelled classes for Wednesday, as did many adjoining districts and private schools.

One major road hard hit by early heavy snow on Tuesday was Interstate 90 through Snoqualmie Pass, the main arterial connecting western and eastern Washington and an important trucking route.

The road was closed for avalanche control from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., from North Bend, 34 miles east of Seattle, to Ellensburg, 107 miles east of Seattle. That caused massive traffic jams in both directions, said Mike Westbay, spokesman for the Washington state Department of Transportation.

"We have our day- and our night-shift crews who usually work 10 hour shifts now doing 12 hour shifts, so we're working around the clock on roads, plowing snow and putting down de-icer," he said.

They expect to continue their avalanche control efforts throughout Wednesday as even more snow falls, Westbay said.

"People should probably postpone trips across the pass until later," he said.

Meanwhile, further south the National Weather Service issued a hurricane force wind warning for the waters along about 100 miles of the central Oregon Coast overnight into Wednesday afternoon, said meteorologist Tiffani Brown.

Brown said the storm could yield wind gusts up to 100 miles per hour offshore, and generate a high and dangerous surf zone.

In the Portland metro area, Wednesday morning's commute was expected to be snarled by one or more inches of snow falling overnight and Wednesday morning, especially in the hills around the city, Brown said.

Mount Rainier rangers search for missing snowshoer (Reuters)

SEATTLE (Reuters) ? Park rangers and volunteer mountaineers searched Mount Rainier National Park with snowshoes, skis and dogs for a second day on Sunday looking for a missing 66-year-old snowshoe hike leader.

Yong Chun Kim was leading a Tacoma hiking club on a snowshoe walk near the park's 5,400-foot-high Paradise region on Saturday afternoon when he slipped and fell down a steep incline, park spokesman Lee Taylor said.

Kim was well-equipped for a day hike, but not for overnight blizzard conditions, with icy winds whipping up to 50 mph, temperatures at 10 degrees Fahrenheit and up to 30 inches of fresh snow falling in parts of the park on Saturday night.

"We're still hopeful but as the more time goes by, it's less likely he's alive and well," Taylor said.

Kim radioed his group to continue the hike, telling them he would traverse the area where he fell, but rangers began the search about 30 minutes after he failed to show up, Taylor said.

Back-country campers had spotted fresh tracks believed to be those of Kim, who is an experienced 10-year snowshoe hiker.

The National Park Service describes Rainier's Paradise region as "the snowiest place on earth where snowfall is measured regularly."

The Mount Rainier search is the second in less than two weeks. A massive manhunt found the body of Benjamin Colton Barnes, 24, drowned in a creek and frozen a day after he shot and killed park ranger Margaret Anderson on New Year's Day.

Acer Iconia Tab A700 hands-on (updated: now with more video!)

Acer Iconia Tab A700
So, the mystery quad-core tablet shown off by Acer at CES has a name... kinda. The Tegra 3-powered unit is the oft rumored and leaked Iconia Tab A700, though, we were told repeatedly that this is just a technology demo and not a consumer product -- so don't be surprised if you never see an A700 come to market. Underneath the hood is a 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 and a full gig of RAM for pushing a customized version of Ice Cream Sandwich to its 10.1-inch 1080p "IPS quality" panel. The most glaring difference between Google's stock experience and Acer's version of Android is the "ring" -- a lockscreen launcher with a selection of shortcuts available depending on which direction you drag your finger in. The textured back felt quite nice to the fingers, though it sports a healthy amount of heft that might worry some fans of lightweight devices. As far as ports go, you're looking at an HDMI-port, microSD and micro USB -- the latter of which can actually be used to charge the device. Huzzah! (Update: After originally telling us the tablet could be charged via micro USB they came back to us and said they had to double check that one). Check out the gallery below for a few more impressions.

Update: Head on after the break for a quick hands-on video.

Facebook Says Privacy Advocates Should Applaud Timeline, EPIC FTC Probe Unnecessary

EPIC Vs FacebookTechCrunch has received a response from Facebook to the Electronic Privacy Information Center's letter urging the US Federal Trade Commission to investigate Timeline for possible privacy violations. Facebook says it has not violated user privacy or its November settlement with the FTC. That's because Timeline simply makes historic content more accessible, not visible to anyone who couldn't already see it. Also, Timeline provides Activity Log for managing the visibility of this content. I agree. Facebook may be bending the rules of privacy, but it hasn't broken them. In response to EPIC's call for an FTC investigation, as reported by Identity Matters, Facebook's Director of Public Policy Andrew Noyes tells TechCrunch:

O.C. Serial Killer Sought In Deaths Of 3 Homeless Men

ANAHEIM, Calif. ? Police and advocates on Thursday warned homeless people in Orange County not to sleep alone on the streets because a serial killer has already killed three homeless men.

The Orange County Rescue Mission is handing out flashlights and whistles to the homeless, in an effort to help them protect themselves, said Jim Palmer, the group's president.

Palmer's group is encouraging area homeless to sleep in groups, or better yet, come inside to a shelter.

"Our goal is to get them into those beds and fill those beds," he said.

Darryl Bossier, 49, said he sleeps outside the Orange County administration building in downtown Santa Ana ? one of a dozen transients who use the benches that zigzag across the courtyard as a place to rest each night.

"I'm a watchdog. I don't want them to get anybody," Bossier said of the killer, adding he sleeps only about four hours a night. "Who wants to wake up next to somebody dead?"

He said he learned of the killings three days ago but would not go to a shelter because he had his cellphone stolen from his bag the last time he slept there.

"You take a deep breath, but what are you going to do? Watch out for the people who are there."

Authorities have asked for the public's help in finding the killer, as a special task force searches for the suspect with officers from Placentia, Anaheim and Brea, the Orange County Sheriff's Department and the FBI.

An image of a suspect from a video surveillance camera in the area where the first victim was killed shows what appears to be a thin man dressed in a dark hoodie or sweater who appears to be lying in wait for his victim.

The body of the first victim, 53-year-old James McGillivray, was found Dec. 21 near a Placentia shopping mall. The second victim, 42-year-old Lloyd Middaugh, was found on a riverbed trail in Anaheim a week later.

The third victim, 57-year-old Paulus Cornelius Smit, was discovered with fatal stab wounds outside a Yorba Linda library, where a photo of him stood at a small candlelit memorial this week.

Two of the killings took place at night and one in the late afternoon.

No motive has been disclosed, and investigators have found no connection among the victims beyond their homelessness.

Aveo (Barely) Passes Study With Kidney Cancer Drug, Stock Falls ...

Luke Timmerman1/3/12

[Updated] Aveo Pharmaceuticals is starting the New Year with news that it has passed the most important clinical trial in company history, although it appears to have barely eked out the victory, which disappointed investors.

Cambridge, MA-based Aveo (NASDAQ: AVEO) said today that its lead experimental drug reached its goal in a?pivotal clinical trial known as TIVO-1. The study showed Aveo?s drug was able to keep kidney tumors from spreading for a?longer period of time than another drug in its class, sorafenib (Nexavar) from Bayer and Onyx Pharmaceuticals. The trial of 517 kidney cancer patients showed that Aveo?s tivozanib was able to keep tumors from spreading a?median of 11.9 months, compared with 9.1 months for the existing drug. The study was designed to show the Aveo drug could keep tumors from spreading about an extra three months, so it barely?passed.

Today?s statement didn?t say anything specific about the new therapy?s side effects, although CEO Tuan Ha-Ngoc said the study showed a ?favorable safety profile? for the Aveo drug. More details on safety and effectiveness will be presented in June at the American Society of Clinical Oncology?s (ASCO) annual meeting, Aveo said in a?statement. And importantly, Aveo and its partner, Japan-based Astellas Pharma, said they now plan to file applications for approval from regulators in the U.S. and Europe this year to start selling the new?treatment.

Despite reaching the study?s main goal, Aveo shares fell today, possibly because investors were expecting to see the Aveo drug demonstrate a?bigger advantage over the competition. Aveo stock fell $2.13, or about 12 percent, to $15.07 at 10:20 am?Eastern.

[Update: 11:50 am Eastern] If there was one surprise in the results, it was that patients on the competing drug did a?bit better than expected, Ha-Ngoc said by phone this morning. Patients on Onyx and Bayer?s sorafenib have typically been able to live for five to nine months without their tumors spreading, so today?s result of 9.1 months was on the high end of the expected range, creating a?higher-than-expected hurdle for Aveo to clear. But Ha-Ngoc said the result definitively shows Aveo met its goal of demonstrating superiority over an active drug, unlike other experimental cancer treatments in this class, which have typically been tested against placebos. He added that Aveo?s drug was able to keep tumors from spreading for a?median of 12.7 months for patients getting their first round of treatment, which is the largest benefit ever shown for patients in that group, he?says.

?We are extremely happy today. It?s a?fantastic way to start the year for us,? Ha-Ngoc says. Given the drug?s advantage in its safety profile, and its ability to delay tumor progression, tivozanib ?should be in position to be the first-line treatment of choice,? Ha Ngoc?says.

He added that the result is just the first time Aveo has passed a?pivotal trial, and it is looking forward to additional studies of tivozanib as a?treatment for other tumor types, and to help provide momentum for the rest of its pipeline. ?We are here to build a?real company,? he?says.

The Aveo drug is an oral pill designed to cut off the blood supply that nourishes tumors, by specifically blocking three different forms of VEGF receptors that are on the surface of cancer cells. Aveo?s tivozanib is supposed to be a?more selective blocker of VEGF than two currently marketed drugs that work in a?similar way-Pfizer?s sunitinib (Sutent) and Bayer and Onyx?s sorafenib. Researchers hope that more selective VEGF receptor can more completely shut off blood flow to tumors, and also avoid blocking similar receptors on healthy cells-which can cause side?effects.

The market for treating kidney cancer is significant. About 61,00 new cases of kidney cancer were diagnosed in the U.S. last year, and 13,000 people died from the disease, according to the American Cancer Society. Pfizer?s sunitinib, first approved in January 2006, generated $1.06 billion in sales in 2010. Bayer and Onyx?s sorafenib generated $934 million in sales the same?year

Investors, and researchers, have had high hopes for the Aveo drug since it passed a?mid-stage study of 272 patients, which was presented at the ASCO meeting in June 2009. The Aveo drug showed in that study it was able to keep tumors from spreading a?median of 11.8 months, with mild side effects reported, including high blood pressure and hoarseness of?voice.

So today?s TIVO-1 study essentially confirms what researchers had seen in the prior?study.

Aveo didn?t provide detailed breakdowns of how the drug performed in various patient demographic groups, although it did suggest the drug?s advantage was more pronounced in patients getting their first round of therapy. The Aveo drug kept tumors in check for a?median of 12.7 months compared with 9.1 months for those on the competing drug who were previously ?treatment naive.? About 70 percent of the patients in the study fit this description, Aveo?said.

GOP picks new party leader; next task: resolve debt

MARSHALL - The Republican Party of Minnesota has moved forward in mending its wounds by replacing Amy Koch with Dave Senjem as Senate Majority Leader and electing a new party chairman in political consultant Pat Shortridge to replace Tony Sutton.

The Central Committee met Saturday to elect its new leader, and Secretary-Treasurer David Sturrock of Marshall said Shortridge brings a combination of tested experience, as well as a fresh face to the beleaguered party.

"We need both of those right now," said Sturrock. "We're very fortunate he's willing to offer himself to lead the party at this time."

Shortridge will serve out the remainer of the current term before the party elects a new leader in April 2013.

Now comes some more heavy lifting.

The party, besides having to fill those key positions, is also looking at nearly $1.3 million in debt, with another potential $719,000 in legal expenses.

Part of Shortidge's task is to let potential donors to the party know "their money's going to be spent wisely," he said at Saturday's meeting. He said the party must "walk and chew gum," meaning it must begin to retire the debt while raising money for the upcoming 2012 elections. "We have to pay down our debt at the same time as we invest in critical programs."

"What he meant by saying 'walk and chew gum,'" Sturrock said, "is we need to deal with the financial picture and carry on our political mission at the same time. Both are important. With our financial situation we need to develop an orderly plan to pay off our debts, and that will require various steps."

One of those steps was to figure out what the real financial picture is, Sturrock said. That became clear last week when officials revealed the Minnesota Republican Party is nearly $1.3 million in debt, plus the additional $719,000. Next, Sturrock said, is for the party to develop a process to work through its debt issues - a process he said could take "a couple of years." Sturrock also said the party needs to investigate some possible internal reforms.

"We need to understand what our true financial picture is and what our obligations are in real time," Sturrock said. "We need to have some careful, thorough discussions about what kind of internal reform we need."

After his election, Shortridge said fixing the debt was "pretty simple - raise more, spend less," the Star Tribune said.

Shortridge said his top priorities will be retaining Republican control of the Legislature and protecting the party's four U.S. House incumbents. Republicans in 2010 captured both the Minnesota House and Senate for the first time since 1971. Democratic U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar is up for re-election in November and Shortridge, who managed former U.S. Rep. Mark Kennedy's losing campaign against Klobuchar in 2006, has reportedly not emphasized that race.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

In Prague, a tale of communism past

A new exhibit in Prague highlights the way museums were used as a communist propaganda tool, molding the way citizens interpreted moments in their shared history.?

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

Museums as a communist propaganda tool are the focus of a new exhibition titled ?Red Museums? at the National Memorial in Prague, Czech Republic. The exhibition, organized by the National Museum, takes a look at how the communist regime used museums to shape cultural knowledge by reinterpreting watershed moments in Czech history in a way that satisfied those in power.?

By the 1950s the Communist Party had begun to establish its own museums, such as the Museum of V.I. Lenin, which introduced visitors to communist ideals via the life of the Soviet leader. Traditional museum exhibits underwent an ideological transformation ? all attempts at discussion or historical interpretation made way for communist education. For example, in the 1970s, exhibitions showcased the 1968 Prague Spring uprising in a negative light. For the then-Czechoslovakians who visited these museums from 1948 to 1989, the communist-colored exhibits provided a type of false security by showing images of a functioning and united society, while confirming the stereotypes of their nation.

?Red Museums? exhibit organizers hope to revive a discussion of how history has been presented in Czech museums as well as the role of museums moving forward into the 21st century.?
